On 7 July 2016, Birmingham Law School's Dr Maureen Mapp co-hosted a roundtable discussion on the regulation of crypto currencies in Kampala, Uganda.
The event was co-funded by the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI), Birmingham Law School, and the University of Birmingham College of Arts and Law. The report contains public policy, legal and socio-cultural implications of regulation, consideration of potential approaches to regulation, and a set of draft guiding principles that should underpin any policy or legal framework.
The event draws on Maureen Mapp’s work on the adoption of virtual currencies, and its impact on the economy and legal system of Uganda. The work was done under the auspices of the Commonwealth Secretariat and fed into the Report of the Commonwealth Working Group on virtual currencies.
