All languages offered by the Department have been rated within the Top 10 of the latest edition of the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

The 2017 rankings see our languages rising: French 7th, German 8th, Iberian 6th, Italian 9th, and Russian 6th.

The Times rankings follow rises for all languages in the 2017 Complete University Guide:

Modern Languages at Birmingham climbed to 11th in the latest Guardian league tables.

Dr Stephen Forcer, Head of Modern Languages, welcomed news of the league table rises: ‘League tables have become an important guide for University applicants and it’s great to see this external validation of the Department. There is a lot of hard work by staff - and by students - behind these figures. At the moment we are reviewing the whole of the Modern Languages curriculum and thinking about how we could do more for students. This includes contact hours, more time with native speakers, use of language technologies, employability and work experience. It’s a challenging time for Modern Languages nationally but the subject area has a huge amount to give to students, and to the country as a whole. We are thinking about the best ways to present this within the curriculum, and how to improve further.’
