Dr Michael Wiedorn from Georgia Institute of Technology is a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Modern Languages this autumn.

Michael is collaborating on projects led by Dr Louise Hardwick and meeting other colleagues in the Francophone Postcolonial (FRANCOPOCO) Network. An Assistant Professor of French, He is a specialist of Francophone literatures and cultures, and more particularly the Francophone Caribbean.
Michael’s forthcoming book, Think Like an Archipelago: Paradox in the Work of Edouard Glissant, is the first monograph in English since 1999 on the Martinican novelist, philosopher, essayist, and cultural critic Edouard Glissant and will appear next year with the State University of New York Press.
Michael has previously collaborated with scholars at Birmingham as an invited speaker at the Race, Biopolitics and Violence in Francophone Postcolonial Studies conference in 2013. The event was part of an EU FP7 project led by Dr Louise Hardwick, who subsequently co-edited a special edition of the International Journal of Francophone Studies to which Michael also contributed.
Michael has previously secured Fulbright and Mellon grants for work in Dakar and New Orleans respectively (over $100,000 USD). He is based at the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Institute of Technology, an institution which has consistently been ranked in the top ten of public universities in North America by U.S. News and World Report and which it is currently ranked 41st in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
