The Department of Music offers its students prestigious learning environments in the £16 million Bramall Music Building to ensure a first-rate student experience.

Music ensamble

The building contains the 450-seat Elgar Concert Hall, one of the most adaptable spaces of its kind in a UK university. Its acoustics can be configured for rehearsals and performances ranging from solo recitals to a full symphony orchestra, our 200-strong University Choir, multi-projector video and music-theatre presentations, and the electroacoustic studio’s 100-channel sound diffusion system, known as the BEAST.

Most excitingly, the Elgar Concert Hall is home to a beautiful pipe organ - the first to be built in this country by the renowned French builder Marc Garnier.

The Dome Rehearsal Room provides a second flexible space for rehearsals, whether for solos and ensembles or a full symphony orchestra. It can be configured, too, for small-scale recitals or theatrical performances.

"Professor Edward Elgar, the University’s first Professor of Music, paved the way for our long musical tradition in which music plays a major part in the fabric of the institution and its relationship with the world."
Professor Sir David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor and Principal

These world-class facilities show our commitment to providing students with the best possible learning environment to ensure their success, both academically and in their future careers.
