Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Birmingham has risen to third in the UK, building on fourth position in 2016, in the latest Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017.

Professor Alison Davenport, Head of School of Metallurgy and Materials, said ‘We are delighted to be consistently ranked as one of the top places to study Materials Science in the country. We have a determined focus on the quality of the education and experience we offer and I’d like to thank our students and staff for all their hard work’.

The Times league table position follows an excellent result in the National Student Survey 2016, which placed the School second in the Russell Group overall, and top for 'Personal Development' topics such as 'The course has helped me to present myself with confidence'.

Metallurgy and Materials students also achieved record results in employability this year, with 98% entering graduate level employment within 6 months of graduation .

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide is created using a variety of criteria including student satisfaction, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and facilities spend, and university dropout rates.
