HSMC works with Manchester Business School to provide the educational component of the NHS Management Training Scheme (MTS) - voted the UK’s most popular scheme in 2014-15 by over 27,000 students in The Guardian’s annual UK 300 survey.  The MTS has come top for the second year in a row, beating off both public and private sector schemes from organisations such as the BBC, Google, Microsoft, Jaguar, John Lewis and Rolls Royce.  This is only one of many awards the scheme has won over recent years (see below for further information) – and is a major achievement in difficult policy and financial circumstances.

This year’s survey also breaks down results according to gender, ethnicity and educational background – with the MTS one of the few schemes to feature in every top 10 (irrespective of students’ backgrounds).

Working as part of different consortia over time, HSMC has been providing the educational component of the MTS at various stages in the scheme’s history and for 15 years in a row (having won this national contract on four consecutive occasions and now continuing to be involved in the multi-award winning scheme via its new Elizabeth Garrett Anderson programme, delivered on behalf of the NHS Leadership Academy).  Over many years, this has brought HSMC into contact with different generations of up and coming NHS leaders, many of whom have gone on to very senior roles in the health service and beyond.

Former alumni of the MTS include the current NHS England Chief Executive, Simon Stevens, as well as his predecessor, Sir David Nicholson (an honorary member of HSMC staff).

Just some of many previous awards for the MTS include:

  • First in The Guardian UK 300 most popular graduate recruiters in 2011, 2013 and 2014
  • Top Rated Public Sector Employer in The Guardian UK 300 in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014
  • 8th in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers 2013 and in the Top Ten of The Times Top 100 list every year since 2003
  • HR Graduate Employers of Choice for The Times Top 100 2013 (also winners in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and runner up in 2014)
  • Target Jobs Public Sector Graduate Employer of the Year 2012, 2013 and 2014

HSMC's Director, Professor Jon Glasby, commented: "We're so proud to have had such longstanding involvement in a scheme of this quality, helping to support and shape different generations of NHS leaders. The health service is one of the crowning achievements of the welfare state and it's hard to imagine a more difficult, demanding, but important job than leading such an amazing organisation."

Professor Jon Glasby

HSMC has been delivering the educational component of the MTS since 1999 – winning the national contract on four different occasions over the intervening years.  HSMC are currently part of a national consortium delivering the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (EGA) and Nye Bevan (NB) programmes on behalf of the NHS Leadership Academy – with current MTS students undertaking the EGA programme as part of the overall scheme.
