Postgraduate researcher Richard Bruce and his supervisor Dr Mike White, both from the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham, have received two awards for their paper "Muscle afferent activation causes ventilatory and cardiovascular responses during concurrent hypercapnia in humans", published in Experimental Physiology in February.

Richard was named the winner of the College Best Publication Award this year, which means that he is therefore shortlisted for the Michael K. O’Rourke PhD Best Publication Award, which will be announced at a ceremony on 26th June 2013. Richard was also celebrating after being named runner-up by the Physiological Society in the Early Career Author’s Prize. His award will be presented at the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) meeting in Birmingham in July.

Dr White said of the award:

"This is high profile external recognition of work carried out in this School. The journal will publish a picture of Richard and his affiliation when publishing the result. The prize will be presented in the presence of an international audience at the forthcoming IUPS meeting in Birmingham, immediately following one of the show piece plenary lectures."
