Research excellence in the College of Arts and Law has been recognised by the national REF exercise assessing both the quality and the public impact of our research.

History, Philosophy, and Theology & Religion have been ranked as top-rated departments in their subjects in the country. African Studies & Anthropology and Classics are among the top 5 departments nationally, while English and History of Art are among the top 10 on the basis of research rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. In all submitted departments, 75% to 95% of our research has been rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

“REF 2014 has shown that the University of Birmingham is a centre of excellence for research across the full range of disciplines in the Arts and Humanities, confirmed as one of the leading five universities in the country for these disciplines.” Professor Michael Whitby, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts and Law.
