Two graduates from the School of Civil Engineering recently received the high accolade of  being shortlisted for the Ground Engineering’s Young Geotechnical Engineer award 2014. Janvi Shah was announced as the winner and Chris Shaw was highly commended at a prestigious awards ceremony, which took place in May.

Janvi impressed the judges with her strategic vision and the gravitas she has beyond her years.  As reported in Ground Engineering (June 2014) Janvi has, “A huge potential to influence the construction industry as a whole, not just the practices of her employer and the geotechnical sector.”  Janvi, who graduated with an MSc Geotechnical Engineering and Management (with distinction) from the School of Civil Engineering, is currently working towards her PhD.  Her research is developing a decision support framework to assess the long term resilience of geotechnical assets.  Her PhD supervised by Professor Ian Jefferson, Dr Dexter Hunt and Dr Gurmel Ghataora and co-financed by the School and Amey, one of the UK’s leading engineering consultancies, provides an excellent balance between academic and industrial input.

Chris graduated with a 1st class MEng Civil Engineering and was soon attracted to the geotechnical profession. He currently works at Atkins, a large internationally renowned Civil Engineering consultancy, and is involved in a wide range of ground works, including being part of the Atkins team involved in the £250M Stafford Area Improvement Project to improve the capacity of the West Coast Main Line around Stafford.  Here he leads the geotechnical design team.
