Each year we think that BUCES has reached its peak of events but each year we continue to grow and events continue to get bigger and better. It’s a testament to the hard work put in by each and every committee member. Winning EPS Society of the Year 2015/16 was a tremendous achievement and I just hope we have lived up to and exceeded the expectations of all the members of BUCES members! There are many a highlight this year but let’s have a quick run through of the year…

BUCES Society of the Year 201516

With the wealth of new starters coming in, coupled with the rising entry requirements there is always a touch of nerves as to what the 1st years will be like but I’m pleased to say they have been a key part of everything BUCES. The annual trip to Coniston brought with it the usual fun and rain. Two groups of freshers travelled up to the Lake District to battle through the suite of challenges presented to them. Needless to say, none of them are going to win any raft building or kayaking challenges as they either sank or swam to get back to shore!

The first event in the social calendar is always the Buddy Scheme Welcome Dinner. As always it was a great success and featured a quiz with some excellent throwback tunes. It’s a great time to bring all the first years together and really break the ice so I’m glad that it went off without a hitch.

The Industrial Dinner always went off with a bang as more and more companies want to attend and there’s fierce competition amongst the students to get the opportunity to do some great networking. Pub Golf and Winter Ball lived up our high expectations and were great successes with 200 people descending onto the streets of Birmingham and over 150 getting their finest outfits on for a great time at Fazeley Studios.

It has been a great year too for our charitable activities raising money for Acorns Children’s Hospice. All together we have raised almost £2,000 for a great charity and we visited the local hospice to see how the money helps. We are truly honoured to work with such an amazing charity.

BUCES 2017

BUCES and Captain “Brumerica” are incredibly proud of everyone here at Birmingham for the great job we did at Frank Morton, the national chemical engineering student sports competition. We brought the treble home and can honestly say we are both incredibly proud to have led such a prominent society which, despite somehow being behind Imperial in the league tables, eclipsed every other university competing by quite a margin!

We hope you agree we’ve had an incredible year. If you think we deserve to keep our Society of the Year crown, or if we are in fact worthy of any of the other EPS Societies’ Awards, please nominate us!
