On 9 June 2015 Birmingham University Materials Society (BUMS) attended the EPS Societies’ Awards and we are delighted to announce that we won Society of the Year 2014/15! The evening was wonderful and a brilliant way to round off the year and say goodbye to the outgoing committee.

The new committee are already looking forward to September and continuing to further develop the Society, building on the fantastic results seen from the projects, ideas and events held throughout the past academic year. A number of the outgoing committee will remain heavily involved so next year we can be active from the very start of term. Our plan is to retain the focus on department community and cohesion and make the School of Metallurgy and Materials the most inclusive, involved, friendly and welcoming place to be a student, to really make sure everyone gets the most out of their time at Birmingham.

The Mentor Scheme is going to continue, and hopefully grow even further, with plans being considered to open out mentoring to all second years who would like it.  Successful events such as the October Careers Event and the highly enjoyable Materials Ball will definitely be back, and the relationship with the Nuclear Society (NucSoc) will be further developed.

It’s been a brilliant year for the Society and so much fun to be part of.  BUMS looks forward to welcoming a new group of students in September and would like to say goodbye and congratulations to all those who graduated this summer.
