MathSoc have had an unbelievably successful beginning to the academic year and the society is truly following through with its set constitutional aims of providing a wide variety of inclusive, non-academic events and projects to its members. With a society committee that has doubled in size and over 200 official members, MathSoc has not only maintained its success but continues to grow and expand as a society. The following elaborates on some highlights of the autumn semester for MathSoc:

The MathSoc Family Scheme, which runs within the School of Mathematics, involves first year undergraduate “children” gaining both academic and non-academic support from their allocated “parents” in successive years. Events for the scheme took place in Welcome Week (September 2014) and included a “Parents Induction Event” to provide guidance and training to “parents”, an introductory event which saw the official introduction of MathSoc as a society and the first meeting of students with their families, and last but not least a “Family Building Event”, which saw the development of family relationships through icebreaker activities, a quiz and over thirty 16” pizzas!

The official launch of the MathSoc Volunteering Scheme aspires to provide students with accessible opportunities to be involved with volunteering and charity work. There are two strands to the scheme: a non-charity and a charity strand. The former of these sees students involved in running the MathSoc trip to Coniston and the MathSoc Family Scheme, which won the Head of College Idea of the Year Award at last year's EPS Societies' Awards. The charity strand of the scheme sees MathSoc supporting our official charity of the year, The Prince’s Trust, through a variety of fundraising events including a hughly successful bake sale, which has raised almost £200 for the charity and we plan to more than double this in the next couple of weeks with our charity bowling night! We're also working with other societies and volunteering groups to organise more events throughout the year, including a charity football tournament and a team to run the Coventry Half Marathon. This support will culminate in our largest and most important fundraising event: the MathSoc Edale Skyline Charity Challenge Walk in the Peak District in March 2015.

Sport continues to be an important aspect of the society – the MathSoc men’s 11-a-side football team, which came second in the Intra Mural Sport League in 2013/14, is showing dedication towards winning the league title for this academic year, while the newly formed MathSoc mixed netball team are still finding their feet but are hoping to have just as much success as the football team!

The autumn semester has seen one of our biggest social events take place – the Annual MathSoc Bar Crawl 2014/15, an event selling out in less than two days for 150 individuals – and will also involve a Careers Networking Event in November with employers, societies and alumni in attendance. The upcoming spring semester will see a trip abroad to Amsterdam in January 2015 and more! Watch this space!
