Professor Janet Lord, Director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham, will be appearing on the BBC’s How to Stay Young programme on Thursday 7th April at 9pm, offering her expertise on the ‘Sit to Rise’ test, an easy-to-administer test, measuring flexibility and strength in the elderly.

The show, which will be presented by Angela Rippon, was filmed last year in Cannon Hill Park with a group of local enthusiastic volunteers including some of our Birmingham 1000 Elders cohort and will be part of a two-part series investigating the latest experiments and research that could help put the brakes on the ageing process.

Professor Lord's research focuses on the innate immune system, the body’s front line defense against infection, and how the efficiency of this system is affected by ageing and stress. Janet's research also focuses on how ageing of the immune system predisposes adults to chronic inflammatory diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. In all of her work she aims to translate research findings into interventions, whether lifestyle (exercise, diet) or pharmacological, to improve immunity and health in old age.
