Mr Andrew Beggs, Clinical Lecturer in General Surgery in the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, has been awarded the Young Coloproctologist of the Year 2016. This is the first time this award has been presented.

He will become the face of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) for the next 12 months, acting as an ambassador for the profession at various events and promoting awareness and research.

Mr Beggs research focuses on colorectal cancer biology and translational medicine and his current research programme is examining the molecular stratification of rectal cancer.

Andrew commented: “I feel very honoured to be the first holder of this post. It is very humbling to know that among my peer group I am regarded as one of the best - and a bit scary to be given such responsibility.

“The whole point of the award is to become the face of coloproctology, to highlight what we are doing in bowel research and to be an ambassador for colorectal surgery in the UK.”

The award is designed to identify and highlight colorectal trainees nationally who have been outstanding throughout their training and have shown excellence in the areas of research and academia, leadership or education and training.

The award is presented by The Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, a group of over one thousand surgeons, nurses, and allied professionals who advance the knowledge and treatment of bowel diseases in Britain and Ireland.
