Getting connected to IT is essential. The University uses a range of online services to help you manage your studies. Find out what you can do to help you stay connected.

Online Registration

You will receive your student username and password when you are asked to complete Online Registration. Completing Online Registration will give you full access to the range of online services available, so it is essential that you complete it as soon as possible when asked to.

You should change your password to something more memorable for you. You can use Password Manager to change your password yourself, any time of the day or night. You will be prompted to change your password every 180 days.

Student email address

We will use your student email address to contact you about important matters relating to your studies and being a student here. You should check it daily for updates and useful information, including information about your induction (orientation) sessions.

Your student email address will take the format of username@student.bham.ac.uk

You will receive your student username when you are asked to complete Online Registration. It will be three letters (your initials) followed by three or four numbers. For example, if your username is ABC123 then your email address will be ABC123@student.bham.ac.uk

The quickest way to access your email is on the MyUoB app, available to download for iOS and Android. You can access your student email account by selecting the Office 365 icon from the my.bham portal. You can also set it up with your existing email app. Postgraduate Research students can access their email account at mail.bham.ac.uk

Free Office 365 software

Microsoft Office 365 is a cloud-based service bringing you access to Word, Excel, and more on up to 15 devices free-of-charge whilst you are a student, as well as enhanced mail storage and access for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students. Find out more about Office 365.

The student intranet is your key source of information as a student, from finding out the latest news to understanding wellbeing support. Take some time to explore the student intranet and understand the information available.

Connecting to wifi

Wifi access is available across campus. Eduroam is the main wifi network for students and staff. Wifi and wired connections are available to those living in University-owned accommodation through ASK4.

Canvas and Library resources

Canvas is the University's virtual learning environment. Depending on your programmeou will use it to access course materials, complete and submit assignments, and to view lecture recordings. Your department may also use it to send you important notifications about your studies.

Through the Library you will have access to millions of books, journals, articles and resources, as well as being able to book group study rooms and PCs, loaning laptops and accessing the Academic Skills Centre.

IT Service Desk

The IT Service Desk provides support for IT on campus and online. You can access the IT Service Portal, visit their reception desk in the Main Library, or contact them by phone.
