This module is designed for distance learning to enable students to demonstrate advanced knowledge and clinical skill (up to "certificate" level) in the following subject areas:
- Minimally invasive direct restorative techniques
- Periodontal treatment
- Endodontic treatment
- Fixed and removable prosthodontics
Some content will also be delivered at two face-to-face residential courses and will provide teaching and/or practical simulation experience in the following module 3 subject areas:
- Direct restorative techniques
- Periodontics
- Endodontics
- Fixed and removable prosthodontics

Assessment
Practical simulation and clinical exercises
Structured preparation/restoration exercises carried out on plastic models, extracted teeth or patients. Students will photograph these exercises and complete structured templates for summative assessment.
The exercises are divided into the following subject areas:
Direct restorative techniques (Simulation) 40%
- Prepare 6 class I cavities in plastic teeth and restore with direct composite
- Class II composite exercise (Prepare an annotated, step-by-step, photographic presentation, suitable for undergraduate education)
- Prepare 1 multi-surface (MOD) cavity and restore with amalgam (or composite)
- Manage occlusal caries in an extracted natural molar (appropriate to lesion)
Direct restorative techniques (Clinical) 10%
(For submission as part of module 7 clinical case portfolio)
- Assess and manage an existing restoration on one patient
- Assess, diagnose and manage on occlusal carious lesion on one patient
Endodontics (Simulation) 25%
- Preparation and obturation of a plastic endodontic simulation tooth (TrueTooth™ – upper first premolar)
