This project is in collaboration with SQW Ltd undertaking an evaluation of as part of University of Birmingham contribution to the Midlands Advanced Ceramics for Industry 4.0 programme.
The university is a member of the Midlands Industrial Ceramics Group (MICG) was established in 2020 to ensure advanced ceramics help drive the competitiveness and success of Midlands advanced manufacturing by tackling key innovation challenges.
MICG was successful in securing £18.27 million in government funding provided through UK Research and Innovation’s flagship Strength in Places Fund (SIPF). Membership of the MICG is made up of blue-chip companies and SMEs including Rolls-Royce, JCB, Morgan Advanced Materials and Lucideon - as well as the Universities of Birmingham, Leicester, and Loughborough.

Regional Innovation Ecosystem
The evaluation aims to answer the following questions:
- To what extent, and how, the programme working at project level and being delivered as intended and what delivery lessons have been learned?
- To what extent, and how, has the programme supported innovation-led regional growth and increased the competitiveness / potential of business clusters to innovate and adopt new technologies?
- To what extent, and how, has programme enhanced local collaboration, building on the regional impact role of local institutions?
- To what extent (and how) has the programme delivered knowledge and societal impact?
- Has the programme provided value for money?
