Your Community

We are proud of the sense of community we foster in the School of Chemistry, from helping our newest students settle in to university life to keeping in touch with our alumni across the world. While you are here, you will find a wealth of ways to make friends, pursue your passions outside of Chemistry and participate in events run by our fantastic student society, ChemSoc.

The School of Chemistry is a thriving community of students and staff located on our beautiful campus. Our students are guaranteed membership of our ChemSoc society, run by students for students, and have numerous opportunities to get involved with societies and volunteering through the Guild of Students.

The School of Chemistry

Welcome from the Head of School (Video transcript)

The School of Chemistry is a medium-sized department - big enough to provide plenty of opportunities and small enough that our students and staff can really get to know each other well. Our Head of School, Professor Rachel O'Reilly, looks forward to welcoming you to our open days and offer-holder visitor days.

Our very active Chemistry Society is run entirely by students and has no membership fee for Chemistry Students! Everyone is encouraged to get involved in activities, from undergraduate to postgraduate students and even staff. We organise sports fixtures, charity bake sales, outreach and career enhancing activities, all alongside our frequent socials and of course ending in the annual black tie dinner for ChemBall!

I chose Birmingham because of the great first year accommodation, it’s social and highly collaborative Chemistry course, and the fantastic campus bursting with life so close to the city. James, Fourth Year MSci Chemistry.
