Growing out of democracy? The effects of a city's population size on its local government system: An exploration of the democratic consequences of population growth on local governance in European capital cities.

Supervisors: Karin Bottom and Timea Nochta

There is limited academic commentary on the democratic consequences of population growth in cities. Research in this area primarily focuses on the consequences of population growth generated by the amalgamation of small local governments into larger ones. However, this PhD research will focus on population growth caused by migration and natural growth within existing local government jurisdictions, to advance our understanding of the democratic consequences of increasing population levels within capital cities.
