How will the Nursing interviews work?

The School of Nursing and Midwifery will be conducting all interviews online for 2026 entry. It is important that you read the below frequently asked questions to find out more about how the interviews will work and what you need to do to prepare.

What do I need to do to prepare for my interview?

    • Make a note of the date and time of your interview.
    • Create an account on www.Zoom.us and ensure that Zoom is installed on your device. The interview link we will send you will not work if you are not signed into Zoom. You will need to edit your name so that it displays your full name followed by your UCAS ID number. You can do this by going onto your profile in Zoom and clicking ‘edit’.
    • We recommend that you check your internet speed, webcam and microphone prior to your interview so that you can rectify any issues that may arise. If your internet connection is unreliable in your home, please contact your school who should be able to assist you.
    • If you are visually impaired and you require some support logging into Zoom on the day, you are welcome to have someone to assist you. That person is also welcome to assist you in your reading task.
    • If you are hearing impaired, please contact us before your interview to discuss your options.
    • If you have a condition such as dyslexia which normally allows you additional time in exams, you must provide us with evidence of this at least one week before your interview so that we can make a note of it to inform interviewers.
    • At the University of Birmingham, we are passionate about being inclusive and transparent. As part of our interview process we will be sharing the interview questions with you 48 hours prior to your interview to allow you to have time to consider the questions and their answers. The aim of this is to reduce some of the anxiety associated with an interview and allow candidates to perform at their fullest potential.
    • Before you attend your interview, please ensure that you watch the short video briefing that our Admissions Tutor has recorded which includes both important practical information on how your interview will work as well as some tips on how to prepare for it. You can access the video using this link
    • Find your photographic identification as we will be performing an ID check with you during your interview. Make sure you know where it is and bring it with you on the day.
    • Dress appropriately as you would for any other interview.

On the day of your interview

  • At the start of your interview, we will check your photographic ID (you must bring the original document) that exactly matches the name on your UCAS application. It doesn't have to be in date, but it does have to be the original document. Photographic ID we accept include a passport, a photo driving licence or an identity card. We do not accept a travel card, school identity badge or similar. If you are unable to comply, please contact us as soon as possible for advice.
  • Your interview will take place via Zoom and will last for no longer than 40 minutes.
  • In the interview room, you will be joined by two interviewers who will undertake your interview.
  • The interview will consist of 4 questions; you will have up to 5 minutes to answer each question.
  • If anything minor disrupts your interview on the day, such as a dip in internet speed or a loud noise coming from outside, then the people interviewing you will make this clear on their mark sheet, which may assist us when we start to make offers.
  • If something major disrupts your interview on the day, please email us at the earliest opportunity. We would need to confirm this with your set of interviewers and reschedule your interview to a different time with a new set of questions.
  • To ensure we are interviewing the correct person, we do ask that you have your camera on at all times. If you wish, you are welcome to change your Zoom background or pin a plain sheet behind you so that your background is indistinguishable. However, please be reassured that interviewers will not take any account of your background.

How will my interview work?

Step 1 – Waiting Room

  • You will first enter a waiting room. Please wait patiently to be let into the main session. This may take a few minutes, but we are aware you have arrived. Please do not log out and back in again during this period.

Step 2 – Main Session

  • Once you are in the main session, you will have a chance to ask any questions you have about how the interview will work. You will then be admitted into the interview room.

Step 3 – Interview Room

  • Once in the interview room, the interviewer will check your ID and provide you with a set of instructions.

Step 4 – End of the interview

  • When the interview has concluded, you will be asked to leave the whole session (or you may be removed if you run out of time). As we are running to a strict schedule, the next candidate will enter as soon as you exit the session entirely. This is normal. Please do not panic at this stage; your interview is complete.

When will I find out if I have an offer?

We aim to give you an indication of the outcome of your interview within a week after your interview via email.

I need to cancel and rearrange my interview, what do I need to do?

  • Unfortunately, we are unable to reschedule your interview date or time, except in extenuating circumstances. You must have a strong reason, such as a medical operation or to attend a funeral, and you should carefully consider your reason for requesting a rescheduled interview before contacting us. If you are unable to make your interview date/time, please reply to this email to discuss your options with us. We will do our best to accommodate you however this may not always be possible. Please note that a school mock exam is not an appropriate reason for requesting a rescheduled interview.
  • If you wish to cancel your interview, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer someone else your interview slot.

What if I don't have my ID?

If you have not brought a form of ID to your interview, we will not be able to proceed with the interview. If you are unable to obtain either a passport or driving license, you will need to contact us at least 1 week before your interview so that we can make arrangements to verify your identity in a different way. Please note that we are unable to make such arrangements on the day of your interview if you arrive without ID.

What if I feel I have been unfairly treated?

If you feel you have been unfairly treated, please email us and we will be happy to assist.

I have a disability, what support is available for me?

Please email us as soon as possible to let us know if you require any additional support on the day of your interview.

Who do I need to contact in case I have additional questions before my interview?

Please contact nursingadmissions@contacts.bham.ac.uk at least one week before your interview.
