Dr Marisza Hijryana is an Assistant Professor in Public Health at the Department of Applied Health Sciences, School of Health Sciences, College of Medicine and Health.

She brings expertise in public health, global public health, dental public health, and mixed-methods research. Marisza is actively involved in teaching, supporting, and supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students at the College of Medicine and Health. She serves as a Deputy Programme Director of the MSc Global Health and has held leadership roles as Module Lead and Deputy Lead across several modules in the Master of Public Health (MPH) and MSc Global Health programme.

Biography

Marisza serves as a Deputy Programme Director of the MSc Global Health. She is also Co-Lead and Deputy Lead for modules within MPH programme. She has a strong commitment and passion for teaching, supporting, and supervising students in higher education. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). 

Marisza is actively involved in teaching, supporting, and supervising  postgraduate (MPH programme) and undergraduate (Medicine MBChB) students at the College of Medicine and Health. 

Marisza obtained her PhD from the University of Edinburgh (UK), where she was awarded the Principal's Career Development Scholarship and Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship. 

Prior to joining the University of Birmingham, she served as a Teaching Fellow in Public and Global Health at Keele University. In this role, she taught, supported, and supervised postgraduate students in both the in-person and online Master of Public Health programmes, as well as undergraduate students in the Medicine (MBChB) programme. 

She was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, University College London (UCL) where she worked on the Lancet Commission on Oral Health and National Institute for Health and Research (NIHR) Global Oral Health projects. Additionally, she was involved in teaching the Basic Statistics for Medical Sciences module for postgraduate students and supporting activities linked to the UCL-WHO Collaborating Centre while she was in the role. 

Furthermore, she was a Research Fellow at the Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education, University of Southampton where she worked on a mixed-methods study on Multiple Long- Term Conditions (MLTC). She was also an Honorary Lecturer at the Edinburgh Dental Institute, University of Edinburgh.

Research

Marisza is a mixed-methods researcher with an interest in global public health, health-related quality of life, social determinants of health and health inequalities, dental public health, and public health education.

Her recent research focuses on the integration of the impacts of disease burden and health-related determinants (individual characteristics and behaviours, social and economic determinants, physical environmental determinants, and commercial determinants) on people’s quality of life and outcomes.
