Personal academic tutors – Your personal tutor will be an academic staff member that teaches on the MBChB Medicine and Surgery course. They will get to know you as you progress through your studies. They will provide academic support and advice to enable you to make the most of your time here at Birmingham.
Student Services Centre - Based within the Medical School, access many services from drop in sessions for advice and guidance, referral to internal and external services to support regarding extenuating circumstances. Here you will find our Wellbeing Officers. They provide professional support, advice and guidance across a range of issues.
Academic Skills Centre - The centre is a place where you can develop your mathematical, academic writing and general academic skills. Become an effective and independent learner through the use of a range of high-quality and appropriate learning support services.
Our student experience team will help you get the most out of your academic experience. They offer research opportunities, placement support, and help you prepare for your post-university career. They also organise social events to help you meet fellow students from your course.
You will be assessed in a variety of ways to help you transition to a new style of learning. At the beginning of each module, you will be given information on how and when you will be assessed. You’ll receive feedback on each assessment within four weeks, so that you can learn from and build on what you have done. Assessments methods will vary with each module and could include:

During your first two preclinical years, you will lay the foundations for your learning, looking at the function of the human body and how each system is controlled. You will learn about the effects of disease and how medical treatments work. Much of the anatomy is taught in small-group sessions, including substantial experience of prosection. You’ll start patient contact from as early as week two to quickly build up your skills and confidence when communicating with patients.

To secure a place at Birmingham, you'll need to meet our general entry requirements as well as those specific to your course.
A*AA with predicted AAA including Biology and Chemistry.
7,6,6 at Higher Level from Chemistry and Biology and one other approved subject. Minimum of 32 points.

A levels must include Biology/Human Biology and Chemistry. You must be predicted a minimum of AAA. We do not have a preference of a third A Level however, General Studies, Critical Thinking and EPQ are not accepted as a third A level.
Required subjects include English Language at grade 6/B or higher, Mathematics (or one, but not both, of Methods in Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics) at grade 6/B or higher, Biology and Chemistry or dual award science at grade 6/B or higher.
As this programme has a mandatory clinical placement, every applicant for admission to the University must have reached the age of 18 years on 1 October of the year of entry.
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.

The University tuition fee covers the cost of your tuition, examination and graduation, and includes membership of the Guild of Students.
The University will charge the maximum approved tuition fee per year. If your offer is for 2025 year of entry, we expect that the tuition fee for your first year of study will be £9,535 for UK students. If Parliament agrees on an increase in tuition fees, the University will increase fees for each year of study normally in line with these changes and will communicate any change in the fees to you without delay. If you are applying for 2026 year of entry, you will be advised of the annual tuition fee closer to the time.

Once you have completed two foundation years, you'll be ready to pursue your chosen specialty. At the end of your course, you will receive your MBChB degree, which is a primary medical qualification (PMQ). Holding a PMQ entitles you to provisional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), subject to its acceptance that there are no Fitness to Practise concerns.
The GMC has introduced a Medical Licensing Assessment for all medical students graduating from UK university to ensure those with a license to practice medicine meet a common threshold for safe practice. You will need to pass the MLA as part of your degree and demonstrate your fitness to practise before you can join the medical register.
