Biography

Raoul Reulen is a cancer epidemiologist with more than 20 years of academic experience specialising in the long-term health consequences of cancer treatment in childhood, adolescent and young adult survivors. He has expertise in large-scale observational real world evidence studies, registry linkage, and survival analysis methods. Author of 85+ peer-reviewed publications; h-index 40. Raoul’s research focuses on the long-term health consequences of cancer and its treatment, primarily in survivors of childhood (age 0–14) and young adulthood (age 15–39) cancer. His work uses large-scale population-based cohort studies linked to national health registries and administrative datasets to quantify risks of adverse outcomes decades after diagnosis.

His national research has centred on two cohort studies: the British Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (BCCSS), comprising nearly 35,000 five-year survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed between 1941 and 2006, and the Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Survivor Study (TYACSS), with over 200,000 survivors diagnosed between 1970 and 2006. Both cohorts have been linked to national death and cancer registrations, Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), national prescription databases, and Mental Health Services Dataset enabling investigation of late mortality, subsequent primary tumours, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary outcomes, mental health, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. His work has generated over 85 peer-reviewed publications in journals including JAMA, BMJ and Lancet Oncology. Internationally, Raoul has played a leading role in the EU-funded PanCareSurFup study, where he coordinated the pooling and analysis of data from 13 cohorts across 12 European countries to quantify the risks of subsequent primary neoplasms.

Postgraduate supervision

Dr Reulen is interested in supervising doctoral research on late physical effects in survivors of a cancer in childhood, teenage years or young adulthood.
