Dipak studied medicine at the University of Bristol and trained as a junior doctor in the south-west of England. After gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004 he departed for Australia to gain further clinical and academic experience. He worked as a Cardiology Registrar in Melbourne for 2 years before starting his PhD studies. Registered at the world-leading National Heart & Lung Institute at Imperial College London, the PhD was an international collaborative project with the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and Monash University in Melbourne. Dipak worked with international leaders in their fields, including the late Professors Doug Altman, Philip Poole-Wilson and Henry Krum.

After completing his PhD, Dipak re-joined the NHS in 2009 and was a clinical trainee in Oxford, specialising in cardiac imaging. During this time, he continued his academic work leading to his appointment as a Clinical Lecturer here in Birmingham, and subsequently appointment as a Clinician Scientist and Consultant Cardiologist at local NHS Trusts. 

Dipak was awarded Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for his work in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy for his teaching. After completing an NIHR Career Development Fellowship designed to improve patient wellbeing and receiving a national award from the British Cardiovascular Society (Michael Davies Medal), he was awarded a Professorship at the University of Birmingham in 2020.

Dipak has gone to achieve a National Clinical Impact Award in 2023 from the UK Department of Health & Social Care. He is an Honorary Professor at University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.

Consortium lead for the £50 million NIHR CVD Inequalities Challenge, in partnership with eight other consortia to revolutionise the approach to cardiovascular disease prevention in the UK.

Co-director of the HealthTech Living Lab in the West Midlands, supported by the Lister Alliance and Cisco Systems to attract new industry investment and the integration of HealthTech into routine healthcare.

National director for the DaRe2THINK NHS-embedded, remote randomised trial platform for Primary Care in collaboration with the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (part of MHRA) and the NIHR Research Delivery Network.

Co-lead for the EU/UKRI-funded HYPERMARKER programme to personalise therapy choice in hypertension using AI-augmented metabolomics.

Founder and lead for the cardAIc integrated artificial intelligence in cardiovascular medicine group, recently used as the exemplar for NHS transformation using digital data in the new NHS 10-year plan.

Chair and Chief Investigator for the STEEER-AF  cluster-randomised trial of education for healthcare professionals in six countries; the European Society of Cardiology’s first clinical trial.

Founder of the CODE-EHR global stakeholder consensus on clinical research using healthcare data, with partnership between academia, industry, regulators, patient and professional organisations.

Lead for the RATE-AF NHS-embedded pragmatic trial of digoxin to improve quality of life in patients with permanent AF, co-designed by patients and the public.

Theme lead in the NHS West-Midlands Secure Data Environment (transforming NHS health data research) and NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (regional experimental medicine).

Global lead for the Beta-blockers in Heart Failure Collaborative Group BBmetaHF; one of the most impactful consortia of pooled individual-patient trial data across cardiovascular medicine.
