Dr Melanie Madhani leads a translational research group to understand the mechanism of hypertension, myocardial infarction and heart failure. Her research group is assessing novel pharmacological strategies to protect against these diseases with scientists and clinicians working together from “bench to bedside, and back again”. 


Dr Melanie Madhani graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1998 and obtained a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences from the Ivy League School, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, USA and University of Wales in 2002. She then joined University College London (UCL) as a British Heart Foundation research fellow, to work under Dr Adrian Hobbs. Here, she investigated the role of nitric oxide (NO) in cardiovascular diseases. Dr Madhani was awarded a UCL Bogue Fellowship to work with Nobel Laureate Dr Louis Ignarro, University of California, LA, USA. In 2005, she joined Dr Philip Eaton's research group at St Thomas’ Hospital, King's College London, where she broadened her experience in cardiac physiology in order to complement her vascular knowledge and skills into NO regulation during myocardial ischaemia reperfusion injury. In 2009, the University of Birmingham appointed Dr Madhani and is an Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine. Here, she continues with her research in this field and collaborates with Prof Frenneaux (Doha, Qatar), Prof Feelisch (University of Southampton), Prof Horowitz (Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Adelaide, Australia), and Prof Hugh Montgomery (UCL), Prof Bryan Yan (Prince of Wales Hospital, Chinese University of Hong Kong). Dr Madhani was the Treasurer for the British Society for Cardiovascular Research (2014-2019) and currently holds an Adjunct Honorary Associate Professor position at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Chinese University of Hong Kong.


Dr Madhani makes substantial contributions to teaching within her specialised field of hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and heart failure at the University of Birmingham. She was previously a Deputy Module Leader for BMed Sci Cardiovascular Cellular Mechanism and has contributed to the development of the new module Cardiovascular Integrated Regulation in Health and Disease.

Dr Madhani has openings for self-funded MRes and PhD (basic science and clinical) in the area of:

  • Nitric oxide and nitrite in health and disease
  • Cardiometabolism in ischaemic heart disease and heart failure 


Research Themes

Dr Madhani’s research programme identifies novel targets and intervention for hypertension, myocardial infarction and heart failure. Her internationally renowned research team focusses on:

  • Novel protective strategies against ischaemia reperfusion injury in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting surgery
  • Assessing the protective role of nitrite and novel redox mediators (e.g sulfur metabolome) against wound healing, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and heart failure
  • Perhexiline and novel cardiac metabolic agents to treat against pulmonary hypertension and heart failure
