Research

Archibong’s research portfolio centres on multiphase flow phenomena and their applications in energy, environmental, industrial process, and biomedical systems. In recent years, his work has expanded to include computational and experimental investigations of electrochemical hydrogen production, focusing on how electrode design and fluid dynamics influence efficiency and thermal/water management for PEM fuel cells. He also evaluates the thermodynamic and economic performance of hybrid energy conversion cycles that integrate power generation, cooling, heating, etc. to identify optimal configurations for low-carbon and sustainable co-generation. Concurrently, his group explores microbial fuel cells using plant‐derived substrates, assessing bioelectricity generation potential and scalability and work on multiphase air contactors and sorbent materials development for Direct Air Capture applications.

In the biomedical domain, Archibong applies fluid‐structure interaction and multiphase modelling techniques to examine blood flow and cavitation in mechanical heart valves, translating insights gained from energy‐focused research into device performance and safety.

To contribute to sustainable and energy efficient fossil fuel production, his earlier work was devoted to  understanding high‐viscosity oil–gas and three‐phase solid–liquid–gas flows in pipelines. Through experimental studies and numerical simulations, he characterized slug dynamics, liquid holdup, droplet entrainment, and sand transport under various operating conditions and inclinations. Complementary efforts advanced non‐intrusive measurement methods, such as electrical capacitance tomography and gamma densitometry, to monitor phase distribution mechanisms in multiphase flow systems.

Archibong’s research integrates modelling, experimentation, and economic assessment to address challenges in clean energy, carbon management, and healthcare, reflecting a sustained commitment to multidisciplinary innovation.

Other activities

Archibong has recently been involved in helping companies set up projects (as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)) that are aligned with the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. These projects are designed to generate means of livelihood for indigenes of the communities where they are situated.
