Associate Professor Chris Weston is a Senior Investigator in the Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research and an Academic with roles as a tutor and module lead on courses within the College of Medicine and Health. His research focuses on the regulation of immune mediated injury and fibrosis in the human liver, and he supervises postgraduate students and fellows working in this area and related cross-disciplinary themes.

Qualifications

  • Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (2022)
  • PhD Biochemistry, Birmingham (2002)
  • BSc Biochemistry with Biotechnology, Birmingham (1998)

Biography

Chris undertook his undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at the University of Birmingham. As part of his final year project, he studied the role of Transhydrogenase in Entamoeba histolytica in the laboratory of Professor Baz Jackson. This evolved into his PhD project, understanding the biophysical properties of the enzyme using molecular biology, stopped-flow kinetics and small angle X-ray scattering approaches.

He then moved to the laboratories of Dr. Oliver Smart and Prof. Ruedi Allemann in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, to undertake a post-doctoral project studying the kinetics and function of short, engineered peptides and photoactivatable linkers for the modulation of DNA binding proteins.

An opportunity then arose for Chris to work as a biochemist in the Medical School, University of Birmingham, in the laboratories of Professor David Adams and Professor Michael Wakelam. Here, Chris started his work on a member of the amine oxidase family of enzymes, Vascular Adhesion Protein-1 (VAP-1), exploring its role in inflammation and uncovering new roles for the protein in the development of fibrosis and utility as a biomarker of liver disease, culminating in a clinical trial of a new therapeutic antibody targeting VAP-1.

Chris has expanded on his early work in the Centre for Liver and Gastroenterology Research and studies the interplay between immune cells and the liver, exploring mechanisms of immune cell recruitment, retention and differentiation, and the impact on endothelium, fibroblasts and epithelial cell populations in acute and chronic liver disease, and cancer. He also carries out cross-disciplinary research to explore common mechanisms of disease across organs and the consequences and drivers of liver disease (e.g. cardiac, gut, renal), using cutting edge research methodology.

His team is composed of both scientific and clinical researchers, and he receives funding from UKRI, charities and projects with major pharmaceutical companies.
