I am a Brazilian Leitora in the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil (MRE), teaching Portuguese language, Brazilian Literature and Culture at the Department of Modern Languages. I enjoy eliciting textual interpretation, critical thinking and language skills, using different textual genres and media, especially audiovisual. My research focuses on the intersection of language, translation, and culture.

Biography

Upon the completion of my BA in Social Communication - Journalism in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil (1991), I moved to Japan where I lived for 9 years, working at the Consulate General of Brazil in Tokyo. Upon returning to Brazil, I joined the MA programme in Translation Studies at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil, where I graduated with the dissertation: ‘A tradução de metáforas no filme japonês A Viagem de Chihiro’ (2010). I also received my PhD from the same programme (with a doctoral exchange period at the University of Arizona, USA), with the thesis: Literatura traduzida de Murasaki Shikibu: análise paratextual em Genji Monogatari (2014).

More recently I took a second degree in English Language and Literature at UFSC (2018), which has given me an excellent combination of skills in language teaching. Before joining the University of Birmingham as a Brazilian Leitora with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil (MRE), I concluded my postdoctoral research on Translation and Lexicography at UFSC (2020), where I taught on the undergraduate programme of English Language and Literature, and on the postgraduate programme of Translation Studies.

Teaching

I have a broad teaching experience including language, translation and culture, and the intersection between these domains. My academic path, including a background as a teacher of Japanese, Portuguese as a Second Language, and English language, brought me considerable practical know-how. My contribution at the Portuguese Studies programme includes coordinating the Portuguese Language course at the Institution Wide Language Programme – Languages for All, and teaching modules on undergraduate and postgraduate, such as:

  • Portuguese Core III & IV – Intermediate
  • Portuguese Core VI & VII – Advanced Language and Translation
  • Intermediate – Portuguese Language
  • LM Translating for Business
  • LM Specialised Translation

Research

My research interests center on translation studies and language teaching, focusing on the intersection between language, translation and culture, particularly the themes: Translation between literature and other media, animated film, audiovisual translation; children’s literature; translation and culture; paratexts and (para)translation; and lexicography and translation.

Other activities

I am engaged in activities to promote Portuguese language and Brazilian Culture at the University of Birmingham, working alongside the University’s International Office. I also contribute to the  coordination and teaching of the Portuguese language course at the Institution Wide Language Programme – Languages for All.
