International Research and Engagement

The College of Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS) welcomes students and researchers from all over the world, creating a thriving international community for mutual learning. Our researchers collaborate with international partners to conduct impactful and sustainable research and change health and healthcare policy and practice around the world.

Our international reach

  • Our student body across the College of Medical and Dental Sciences includes more than 620 international students from over 90 countries.
  • Over 20% of our MDS employees are overseas nationals, that’s over 350 staff members from 67 different countries.
  • Over 27% of our postgraduate taught (PGT) cohort for 2022/23 were students from overseas.
  • We currently have 279 ongoing MDS research projects being conducted with overseas funders and/or partners.
  • We are leading on 35 clinical trials that have recruited or are currently recruiting participants internationally, from over 20 different countries across our two clinical trials Units (Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit and Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit).
  • We have trained over 32,000 alumni around the world in the fields of medicine, biomedical sciences, dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy.
