The College of Medical and Dental Sciences hosts a diverse range of programmes, led from both our Birmingham and Dubai campuses. Student mobility
Turing scheme
The University of Birmingham has successfully secured funds from the UK government’s Turing Scheme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. It provides an opportunity to offer our students support to study or work abroad through placements and electives. The funding support has an emphasis towards supporting students who are from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in student mobility.
The College of Medical and Dental Sciences is a highly active participant in the Turing scheme. Most recently, UoBs Turing success allowed our college to send 153 students to 43 different countries for short-term mobility placements and electives supported by the Turing Scheme. The active programmes included Medicine electives, Nursing electives, Biomedical Sciences, and Post Graduate Taught programmes including MSc Health Economics. There are also future additional opportunities for Pharmacy, Post Graduate Research and Dentistry.
Starting with an almost non-existent background of Health Economics, I graduated with a distinction, having had the experience of a lifetime studying at two of the world’s top Universities: The University of Birmingham, and Monash University. The opportunity was all thanks to the excellent support of the staff at the Health Economics Unit in Birmingham, and the Centre for Health Economics at Monash University.
Steve Nwokeocha
Steve came to the UK from Nigeria to study on the MSc as an international student, and was one of four students from the MSc Health Economics and Health Policy to be awarded funding through the Turing Scheme to travel to Melbourne, Australia. Steve completed his dissertation as a placement with the Centre for Health Economics at Monash University. The Turing Scheme gave Steve the opportunity to build connections with academic health economists across two different continents, which he feels broadened his perspective and enhanced his research skills. His dissertation was entitled “The Economic Burden of Sickle Cell Disease to The Healthcare System of Australia”.
Dubai campus
Additionally, our undergraduate BSc Biomedical Science and MSci Biomedical Science courses are offered in Dubai as well as Edgbaston. Our blended approach, grants Dubai students access to UK facilities, will allow you to work in state-of-the-art laboratories and to find out how research translates into advances in clinical practice. You will explore emerging fields such as stem cell therapies and also learn more about major disorders like cancer, cardiovascular diseases and arthritis. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy online lectures from Birmingham experts as well as joining them in your final year to access the University's own active research laboratories.
