Entry requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University's general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements. 

Please note: If you have taken exams which are from another country's national education system (eg the Arbitur from Germany or SAT and AP exams from the USA) you should consult the country specific section for that country for qualification equivalence information. If you are unsure about the acceptability of your qualifications for entry to Birmingham please contact us for further details.

Birmingham Foundation Academy

Many students who have studied in China have followed a 12 year education system. For admission onto an Undergraduate degree programme, the University of Birmingham requires all applicants to have studied for 13 years, and therefore you may need to take a foundation year before commencing your undergraduate programme. 

For entry into the Birmingham Foundation Academy, an overall grade of at least B or 80% in year 2 of Senior High School, including B or 80% in Mathematics, from the High School Graduation Examinations for the Engineering and Physical Science Pathway.

Undergraduate

Holders of the High School Certificate/Senior Middle School Graduation and a suitable foundation programme, and holders of two/three year Diplomas, with a good performance (80% average or above) from a recognised institution, will be considered for entry to undergraduate programmes.

Postgraduate

Students with a bachelor degree (4 years minimum) may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. However please note that we will only consider students who meet the entry guidance below.

  • Please refer to the ‘Business School’ guidance below if you are applying for a Business or Economics programme (not including MBA). You can see the relevant courses on the Business school website.
  • Please refer to the ‘All other programmes’ guidance below if you are applying for all other courses. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS TO THE BUSINESS SCHOOL (BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS COURSES)   
 
GROUP 1 UNIVERSITIES

  • University is ranked in the top 100 Netbig ranking either in 2012 or 2013. We will also consider institutions part of the prestigious 211 and 985 universities.
  • We will consider students from these institutions with 80% or above.
  • Borderline cases: we will consider students with 70-79% if you have a relevant degree and good grades in relevant subjects and/or relevant work experience.

GROUP 2 UNIVERSITIES

  • University is ranked in the top 101 to 150 Netbig ranking either in 2012 or 2013.
  • We will also consider certain institutions that are AFFLIATED COLLEGES of the prestigious 211 and 985 universities or top 150 ranking university in Netbig 2012 or 2013.
  • We will also consider the following 8 specialist Business universities:

1.     University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (上海理工大学)

2.     Beijing Technology and Business University (北京工商大学)

3.     Huaqiao University (华侨大学)

4.     Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (南京财经大学)

5.     Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (天津财经大学)

6.     Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (广东外语外贸大学)

7.     Jiangxi University of Finance (江西财经大学)

8.     Capital University of Economics and Trade (首都经济贸易大学) 

  • We will consider students from these institutions with 85%.
  • Borderline cases: we will consider students with 80-84% if you have a relevant degree and good grades in relevant subjects and/or relevant work experience.

ALL OTHER INSTITUTIONS = If you do not meet the requirement for group 1 or 2 university above then you are not likely to be considered for entry to our Business School. However you may be considered for other programmes outside of the Business school, see details below.

  • University is ranked in the top 200 Netbig ranking either in 2012 or 2013. We will also consider institutions part of the prestigious 211 and 985 universities.
  • We will also consider certain institutions that are AFFLIATED COLLEGES of the prestigious 211 and 985 universities or top 200 ranking university in Netbig 2012 or 2013.
  • We will consider students from these institutions with 80% or above.
  • Borderline cases: we will consider students with 70-79% if you have a relevant degree and good grades in relevant subjects and/or relevant work experience.

GROUP 2 UNIVERSITIES

  • University is ranked in the top 201 to 500 Netbig ranking either in 2012 or 2013.
  • We will also consider certain institutions that are AFFLIATED COLLEGES of these universities.
  • We will consider students from these institutions with 85%.
  • Borderline cases: we will consider students with 80-84% if you have a relevant degree and good grades in relevant subjects and/or relevant work experience.  

 

GROUP 3 UNIVERSITIES

  • University is ranked in the top 501 to 800 Netbig ranking either in 2012 or 2013.
  • We will also consider certain institutions that are AFFLIATED COLLEGES of these universities.
  • We will consider students from these institutions with 85% if you have a relevant degree and good grades in relevant subjects and/or relevant work experience.

3-YEAR DIPLOMAS 

Applicants with 3 year diplomas and substantial work experience at managerial level (5-7 years) can be considered for entry to a non-business postgraduate degree programme.

ALL OTHER INSTITUTIONS = If you do not meet the requirement for group 1, 2 or 3 university above then you are not likely to be considered for entry to our courses. 


Students with Master’s degree may be considered for PhD study.

三年制大专学历

三年制大专的申请人,如果在管理岗位具有5到7年工作经验可以考虑非商科的研究生专业
 

所有其它大学 = 如果您不属于以上几种类型的学历,那么您的申请可能不被我们的专业课程考虑。
 

具有硕士学位的学生可以考虑申请博士学位的课程。 


English Language

You may be required to provide evidence of your English ability. The most commonly accepted qualifications are the IELTS exam (minimum scores from 6.0-7.0) and TOEFL (minimum from 550-600 paper based, 213-250 computer based or 80-100 Internet based). Minimum requirements vary according to the chosen programme.
