This year, our fantastic alumni volunteers helped CEPLER host more careers events than ever, inspired our undergraduates through mentoring, and offered students once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for work placements.

By doing so, our graduates are doing their bit to help build the future and develop the students of today into tomorrow’s lawyers and leaders. Thank you to all of our alumni volunteers.

With the new academic year well under way, we are still in need of your help. There’s lots of ways you can get involved – and being involved can help support your own professional and personal development too.

Being a mentor to a current Birmingham Law School student can be a great way to keep in contact with the University, boost your own CV, and provide invaluable advice to help students enhance their experience. We are in need of mentors in the legal sector as many of our students want to find out more about your job, sector, and any tips on how to become employable graduates!

Our Careers Network runs mentoring schemes with the aim of helping our students create their own career path through the advice and support of their mentor.

All we ask is that you dedicate a minimum of one hour a month to your mentee – contact can be face to face, by phone, email or Skype – whatever works best for you!

CEPLER hosts many popular careers events including our Law in Practice series, where students hear from practitioners in various sectors including banking, criminal law, construction, aviation and shipping, immigration, corporate law, sports law and more.

Join the likes of volunteers Kevin Carpenter (LLB Law with Business Studies, 2008) on Sports Law, Eliza Hakes (LLB Law with French, 2009) on Banking Law, and Ian Insley (LLB Law, 1977) with his talk ‘The Essex Boy and the Coalman: Construction Law in Practice’, and host your own careers event!

Want to help, but can’t spare too much time? You can get involved by simply sparing ten minutes to help us create an alumni profile! We want to hear your memories from your time at Birmingham, how you career has developed, and your top advice for current and prospective students.

Placements offer our students invaluable insight into the working world, giving them the skills and tools they need to become the leaders and lawyers of the future. From shadowing opportunities, to week long placements to summer internships, to date, 47 students have undertaken work experience with the following organisations as a result of CEPLER’s work and alumni generosity:

  • Birmingham Personal Support Unit,
  • British Pregnancy Advisory Service,
  • Carter Moore Solicitors
  • Deutsche Bank
  • No5 Chambers
  • Bailey Wright & Co
  • Hill Hofstetter
  • Higgs & Sons
  • HM Courts and Tribunals Service
  • Legal Insurance Management Group
