Presessional Refund Policy

Payment of fees

  1. Full payment of fees is required no later than one week after the start of the course.  Information about payment methods can be found on the fees and funding section of the relevant presessional course here.

Your cancellation rights

  1. After you have accepted your offer of a place, you can cancel your acceptance within the cancellation period without giving us any reason.  The cancellation period runs for 14 days from the date we accept your application.  If you cancel your place within the cancellation period, any payments received will normally be refunded in full.  If you start your course during the cancellation period, the University will charge you a reasonable sum for the course provided.  Important Information about the Presessional information, including the cancellation form, is now published at:

Refund of deposit

  1. After the 14 day cancellation period, refunds of the deposit will normally only be provided in the following circumstances:

  • If you do not meet presessional entry requirements and BIA cannot offer a presessional course, you are entitled to a full refund of the deposit.

  • If the University withdraws the offer for the main programme, and therefore you are unable to start the presessional course, you will be entitled to a full refund of the deposit.

  • If you are unsuccessful with a visa application, you will be entitled to a refund of the deposit, less an administration fee of £100.  Evidence of the visa refusal must be provided.

  1. In exceptional circumstances, a deposit may be refunded if you are prevented from commencing your studies in the UK by matters outside your control (other than those referred to above), for example a serious illness or a death in your immediate family.    The University reserves the right to deduct an administration fee of £100 from the deposit in these circumstances.

  2. Requests for refund of the deposit, including supporting documentary evidence, should be sent by email to psfees@contacts.bham.ac.uk within 3 months of the deposit payment date.

  3. Please note that:

  • If a payment was made by card, the refund will be made back to the original card used.

  • All other refunds will be paid directly into the original payer’s bank account.

  • If a payment was made by Draft, you will be required to submit a copy of the remittance advice to show the original payer.

Refund of fees

  1. No fees will be refunded because you arrived after the start of your English language course.

  2. No fees will be refunded for authorised absence where you are expected to resume your studies after a short period of agreed absence.

  3. If you have started a presessional course and then withdraw before the end of the course, you may be entitled to a partial refund as set out below.
