Meet the study abroad incoming Team and current exchange students at the University of Birmingham and find out what it is like to study at a Russell Group university and to live in Birmingham.  We are running online information sessions that any prospective exchange and fee-paying students can join to ask any questions, if you wish to spend a semester or full year of your home university degree at our institution.

The University is proud of its reputation band and is currently ranked 90th in the QS World University Rankings 2022, cementing our position in the top 100 universities globally. In the UK, the Complete University Guide 2022 Birmingham was ranked 19th out of 130 institutions, in The Guardian University Guide 2021 Birmingham is ranked 21st out of 121 institutions surveyed and in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 Birmingham is ranked 19th out of 121 universities surveyed.

Making important things happen

The University of Birmingham is where pacemakers and plastic heart valves were developed, where the first artificial vitamin (Vitamin C) was synthesised, and where the cavity magnetron was developed, leading to applications such as radar and the microwave oven.  In addition, the first clinical trials of the contraceptive pill outside the USA were carried out, having a fundamental impact on the quality of life for women worldwide.

Today, the University continues to build on this pioneering heritage. We are at the forefront of research, leading the field in many of the emerging disciplines of the 21st century, such as nanotechnology, gene therapy, and robotics. Most recently, contributing to the discovery of gravitational waves.
