Your student experience in the Department of Biomedical Sciences

Your time at university offers you the chance to discover new interests, find a hidden talent, meet new people and make lifelong friends. It is important to find a healthy balance between your studies, placements and social life and at Birmingham, we offer many ways to help you do just that.
Placements
One of the highlights of the Biomedical Science course is the opportunity to undertake a summer research project placement or an optional year in industry. A number of our students have opted to make the most of these opportunities, including Chloe Tanner and Victoria Saunders who created video blogs of their experiences.
Our partnerships with the Université de Tours, France and Tongji Medical College in Wuhan, China means you can gain valuable research experience in the summer putting the knowledge you developed on the course in real life scenarios.
University of Birmingham Medical Society (MedSoc)
The University of Birmingham Medical Society (MedSoc) is an award-winning student-run medical society open to all students studying at the College of Medicine and health (CMH). With over 2,500 members and more than 70 societies on offer, it is likely that MedSoc will become an important part of your student life at Birmingham.

Guild of Students
As well as MedSoc, the University is also home to the Guild of Students. The Guild of Students is a charity and students’ union for more than 34,000 students studying at the University of Birmingham. If you’re a student here, then you’re automatically a member of the Guild of Students. It is here to help you to develop skills outside of your studies, meet people across the University and to make sure you get the best from Birmingham.
City of Birmingham
As well as the societies you can join, Birmingham also has lot to offer as a city. As the UK’s second city, it really is more than just somewhere to study, it is somewhere to enjoy and explore! From museums, festivals, shopping centres, bars and restaurants there is something for everyone in Birmingham - and it's cheaper than you might think!
You can visit the world-famous Bullring shopping centre which is home to over 160 shops, or why not try the open markets, vintage clothes stores and street food outlets in Digbeth? If you fancy a bit of culture, we have a wide variety of theatres, comedy clubs, art galleries and music venues, not to mention the famous curry houses of the Balti Triangle and Cadbury World!
Birmingham is also full of green spaces to relax and unwind in, with over 8,000 acres of parks and open space to escape to, Birmingham is one of the greenest cities in the UK.
