About us
Mission
To support Black scholars through mentorship, academic development, and cultural integration while promoting equity, diversity, and a sense of belonging across UK higher education institutions. We are committed to creating an environment where Black students and staff thrive, feel valued, and contribute meaningfully to university life.
Vision
To build a nationally recognised platform that advocates for Black academic excellence, enhances institutional belonging, and fosters a sustainable pipeline of leaders, innovators, and researchers across diverse disciplines. We envision a higher education sector where Black scholars are fairly represented, fully supported, and celebrated at every level.
What we do
We offer tailored academic mentorship, peer support, and professional development opportunities for Black scholars—ranging from undergraduate students to early-career researchers and staff. Through one-to-one guidance, workshops, and community spaces, we help members navigate academia with confidence and clarity.
Academic Mentorship
Provide tailored academic mentorship and informal support to Black scholars at all levels.
Cross-Cultural Networking
Promote cross-level and cross-cultural networking across staff, students, and alumni.
Academic Development
Deliver events, workshops, and social gatherings that build academic and personal confidence.
Institutional Integration
We complement existing Equality, Diversity, and Belonging (EDB) frameworks by addressing the specific needs of Black students and staff. Our efforts improve visibility, highlight lived experiences, and help the University foster a more inclusive and equitable environment.
Knowledge Contribution
By sharing insights, lived experiences, and evidence-based perspectives, we contribute to institutional policies, research agendas, and strategic initiatives. Our community actively shapes inclusive practices, influences decision-making, and reinforces the University’s dedication to race equity.
Race Equality Charter & Equality, Diversity and Belonging (EDB) Strategy Alignment
We advance the University of Birmingham’s commitments to the Race Equality Charter and EDB strategy by:
- Enhancing the sense of belonging for Black students and staff; supporting inclusive teaching and learning practices;
- strengthening the recruitment, retention, and progression of Black scholars;
- improving student experience and institutional reputation; and
- advancing cultural awareness and race-equity dialogues.
- Providing insights that inform policy, research, and strategic action.
By collaborating with university stakeholders, we help create a more equitable academic ecosystem where Black excellence is recognised, nurtured, and celebrated
