We have been teaching social work at the University of Birmingham since 1908, it is the longest continuing social work education programme in the country. Over this time we have developed a strong reputation for delivering high quality teaching and learning across our degree programmes.
Qualifying programmes
We offer two qualifying Social Work degrees; an undergraduate route (3 year BA Social Work), and postgraduate route (2 year MA Social Work). Successful completion of either of these programmes will allow you to register with Social Work England as a qualified Social Worker.

The Department of Social Work and Social Care provides a range of post graduate qualifications for those working in social work, social care and related fields. These are designed to combine academic rigour with professional expertise for those seeking to develop advanced knowledge, skills and values in key areas of practice.
Practice Education
These modules are designed for 'Experienced' Social Workers who have a desire to develop practice education skills and knowledge to facilitate the learning and development of a range of learners.
Higher Specialist Work in Mental Health Services
The aim of the programme is to enable mental health practitioners to meet the requirements of the regulator and qualify for approval as an Approved Mental Health Professional by their employing authority. The PGCert Higher Specialist Work in Mental Health Services programme is founded on a flourishing partnership between the Department of Social Work and Social Care and nineteen local authorities (and their partner trusts) in the East and West Midlands. The teaching team has extensive experience of teaching on AMHP and other mental health programmes throughout the country; is involved in research and service innovation within the area; is multi-disciplinary in its professional background; and which includes a number of practising AMHPs.
