Biodiversity
We’re passionate about protecting and nurturing biodiversity on our campus and helping our whole University community connect with nature.
Our beautiful Edgbaston campus isn’t just a place to study and work, it’s a vital green space for Birmingham. Sitting within a network of protected habitats, our campus acts as a “stepping stone” for wildlife, playing a big part in Birmingham’s status as the UK’s first Nature City.
From The Vale Lake, home to little swans, mallards and reed warblers, to our woodlands, grasslands, and hedgerows buzzing with life, nature thrives all around us. Even our iconic Old Joe clocktower has feathered residents, our peregrine falcons. At Winterbourne House and Garden, you’ll find beautiful plant collections, buzzing bee colonies, and peaceful spaces for staff, students and our local community to unwind and connect with nature.

Want to explore? Use our interactive campus map to walk the fruit tree trail, wander around our ‘campus mile’ or discover our most loved trees (look for the heart symbol).
To learn more about biodiversity and the importance of biodiversity for our health and our planet, staff and students can complete our online professional skills short course ‘One Planet, One Future: Biodiversity, Climate Change and Sustainability’.
We want to ensure our campus continues to be biodiversity refuge and hub for environmental learning. Over the coming years, we have plans to develop our orchards, increase pollinator and wildflower planting, wild some of our grassland areas and develop wildlife ponds. Our staff and students can get involved too! Join in through our Green Impact Programme or nature-based volunteering opportunities.
As a proud Nature Positive University we also support students to take action for biodiversity through the Nature Positive Student Ambassadors programme. Interested? Learn more on the Student Sustainability Hub and start making a difference!
