Supporting research breakthroughs

Our researchers are urgently seeking solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing our generation and the next.

Our health, our planet, our happiness and a safe home; these things mean so much to so many of us. Your support can help Birmingham’s researchers make the breakthroughs we need, as part of Birmingham in action.

    Better treatments for cancer

One in two people in the UK will get cancer in their lifetimes. Two things help make a huge difference; finding it early and matching the right treatment to the individual - a lifesaver for one patient could be useless for another. Our researchers are aiming to teach our immune system to target cancer cells, get more patients into clinical trials and more. With your support, they can focus on cancers whose symptoms are easily mistaken for other conditions, including blood, brain and bowel cancers. To find out more about how Birmingham is finding ways to treat and prevent cancer, and to see how you can make a difference, go to our Birmingham in Cancer Wards page.

Help our trees to help us breathe

The Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) is one of the world's leading authorities on the effects of climate change. A landmark experiment in Staffordshire made possible by a transformational £15 million gift, the BIFoR Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) facility is assessing how mature woodland reacts to elevated levels of carbon dioxide.

Help young people get the mental health support they need

In the UK, young people have to wait around ten years between experiencing their first symptoms of mental health issues and receiving help. Early intervention could prevent decades of illness, supporting a satisfying and productive life. Our goal is to work together to investigate and address the big issues that young people want answers to. Find out how you can help.

  • Relationality, Identity and Migration

    People fleeing war and violence

Every two seconds another person has to leave their home to escape war, violence or persecution. It’s difficult to imagine what forces someone to leave their home, friends and everything they own, and put their family through a dangerous journey. Many communities throughout the UK are determined to offer a warm welcome, but they may not have the broad range of knowledge and skills needed to offer the type of help refugees need. You can help local community groups gain this knowledge and skills. Your support can help our academics understand the challenges traumatised families face, and give community groups the knowledge they need to help them find healthcare, education and employment.
