Syed Sadath (Masters student and current Guild President)

Syed Sadath current Guild President

What motivated you to run for the position of Guild President?

As an international student, I wanted to fully immerse myself in the home student experience and make the most of every opportunity here. During my undergraduate degree, I was the Social Secretary of my University, which sparked my passion for enhancing student life. So, when I thought about the best way to make a real impact here, running for Guild President felt like the perfect fit. Unlike other officer roles that focus on specific areas, the President role covers a bit of everything, which is exactly what drew me to it – I wanted to make a difference across the University.

What lessons have you learned so far?

I’ve learned that leadership is all about balance. I’ve also learned that collaboration is key whether it’s working with students, staff, or external partners, real change happens when people come together. And, of course, adaptability is crucial.

What do you hope to achieve during your time as Guild President?

I want to make a real impact on student experience. First, I aim to increase student satisfaction with the Guild by ensuring we’re more accessible, responsive, and delivering what students actually need. Secondly, I’m working on introducing more low-cost meal options on campus, because no one should have to choose between a decent meal and their budget. And lastly, I’m launching a podcast where I’ll be interviewing University Executive Board members to improve accountability and transparency, giving students direct insight into the decisions that affect them.

What advice would you give to anyone considering standing as a Guild officer?

The role is all about balance. Students will have a wide range of needs, and sometimes those needs will conflict with each other. A good officer listens, understands different perspectives, and makes fair decisions that benefit the wider student body. It’s impossible to please everyone, but what matters is making meaningful change and staying true to the reasons for running. The best officers are those who are open to feedback, willing to challenge the norm, and genuinely passionate about improving student life.
