Campus romances

Did you know there are more than 2,750 graduates married to a fellow Birmingham alumnus? Several who have found love in Birmingham have shared their stories with us.

Did you marry a fellow Birmingham graduate? Let us know by email.

Jennifer (née Wright) and Antony Dunn (BA French and German Studies 2005)

Wedding photo of Jennifer and Antony DunnOn 28 July 2012 I married fellow Birmingham alumnus and course-mate, Antony 'Carlo' Dunn in Claines Church, Worcester. Carlo and I share very fond memories of Birmingham and are now settled in Worcester as teachers of Modern Foreign Languages.

Laura (née Clark) (BA English, 2008) and Simon Fairbanks (BA English, 2007; MA English, 2010)

I married Simon Fairbanks on 26 May 2012 in Nottingham on a beautiful summer’s day. We are both enjoying married life together in Birmingham, including working at the University.

Charlotte Spelzini (BSc Sport and Exercise Science, 2004) and Thomas Martin (Meng Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering, 2004)

Charlotte Spelzini married Thomas Martin on April 16, 2011 at Our Lady and The English Martyrs Church, Cambridge.

We both graduated in 2004, myself with a first in MEng, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacture and Management. Charlotte, graduated with a 2:1 in Sports Science.

Our courtship started when we met in our final year at University when I was the first team University football team captain, and Charlotte was in the three time BUSA championship netball team. We were both previously Club Captains, and Charlotte was a sports scholar. For many years the two sports had run annual three legged pub crawls, who’d have thought it would end up with marriage!

Having been travelling and lived in London, we have settled in Cambridge – Charlotte’s a teacher and I’m a Director of a Bank.

Naomi Cassidy (BA English Lit and American Studies, 2001) and Tim Gornall (BA Media and Culture, 2001)

Wedding photo of Tim Gornall and Naomi CassidyNaomi Cassidy married Tim Gornall at St Pancras Church, Ipswich, on July 25, 2009.

The couple first met 11 years previously at University House.

'We had a fantastic, truly memorable day and were delighted so many of our University friends were there to celebrate with us. We feel so lucky we met each other at Birmingham. It will always be a special place for us.'

Among their guests were a number of Birmingham alumni. They were:

Alison Guy (MBChB Medicine, 2003)
Laura Snow (nee Butters) (BNurs Nursing, 2002)
Anna Lombardo (BSc Physics, 2001)
Emily Robinson (nee Mullard) (BSc Geography, 2001)
Sarah Naylor (nee Ratcliffe) (BSc Biology, 2001)
Glenn Williamson (BEng Mechanical Engineering, 2002)
Ian Howitt (BEng Manufacturing Engineering, 2001)
Kristel Del Rosario (BA English and Italian, 2003)

Jayson Grant (BEng Computer Systems Engineering, 2008) and Emma Alexander (BDS, 2010)

Jayson and Emma got married in July 2013!

Mark and Jelena Bruns (BA International Relations, 2010)

We thought it would be quite nice to share that Jelena and myself (Mark) got married in the autumn of last year.

Of course, we had other fellow alumni at the wedding. The best man – a 2009 Geography alumnus and our mutual friend, through whom we met in Jelena's first year and my second year – was obviously a guest of honour.

We love looking back at our time at Birmingham, as this is the time we met each other and where we met lots of friends we still have today.

We now live in London and have busy working lives, but hope to be visiting Birmingham again soon to see how current students are enjoying their time in Birmingham.
