Medici Enterprise Training

Business skills for academic researchers

Medici is a foundational training on how to achieve impact through invention, spin-out, social enterprise, academic consultancy, collaboration with business, developing a service or delivering training.

  • Who is Medici for?

Medici is open to researchers who are considering commercialisation through any business model.

Arts and science disciplines are equally welcome, and delegates can be at any stage of their journey, from early consideration with no clear business offering to working on a specific and viable business idea.

Medici is delivered by a team of entrepreneurial experts and trainers. The team also delivers bespoke onsite training courses at other universities and is working with the Forging Ahead project to deliver a Medici programme for Midlands universities in 2026.

What does Medici cover?

Medici provides an introduction to entrepreneurship for researchers who are at the beginning of their commercialisation journey.

Seven days of in-person training are delivered by experienced trainers and entrepreneurs. The programme outlines the key stages from having an idea to commercial readiness, and introduces areas like intellectual property, commercial strategy, selling skills, pricing, and culminates with business planning, and investment readiness.

Success stories from Medici

Medici has been running for over 20 years, training hundreds of researchers in commercialisation. Medici can be career-defining, and many delegates have gone on to innovate successfully in their chosen field.

  • Inspired by Medici Enterprise training, Dr Joanna Bucknall founded the Immersive Experience Network (IEN), the UK’s first professional body for immersive creators. Medici equipped her with commercial insight and tools to turn research into revenue streams, while ongoing mentorship supported funding and growth.

Since launching, IEN has introduced paid membership, hosted live and digital “huddles,” and delivered sector reports. Its annual summit and thriving community have positioned IEN as a leading voice in immersive experiences, with Dr Bucknall named among the world’s top 50 influencers.
