Connect Amazonia: UBBI-FAPESPA Collaboration Fund

The University of Birmingham Brazil Institute (UBBI) and the Fundação Amazônia de Amparo a Estudos e Pesquisas do Pará (FAPESPA) are pleased to launch Connect Amazonia 2026, the second phase of their joint research and innovation funding programme, a call to support collaborative research addressing critical challenges in the Amazon region.

Engage Amazonia

The Amazon is home to more than 30 million people, over 350 ethnic groups, and the world's largest tropical rainforest. Despite its global environmental importance, the region faces significant challenges, including climate change, deforestation, land conflicts, and persistent social inequalities.

The launch of the University of Birmingham Brazil Institute (UBBI) has created a major platform for UK-Brazil collaboration, bringing together researchers and institutions to address challenges of critical importance to the Amazon and beyond.

This call builds on the success of the Engage Amazonia 2025 programme, which supported the development of new partnerships between researchers from the University of Birmingham and institutions across Pará. The programme demonstrated the strong potential for long-term collaboration and established a foundation for future joint research and innovation activities.

Building on this momentum, Connect Amazonia 2026 aligns with the Government of Pará's vision for the BioAmazon Valley, an initiative that aims to position Pará as a global centre for sustainable bioeconomy innovation by converting biodiversity, traditional knowledge, and scientific expertise into sustainable products, technologies, services, and economic opportunities.

The programme will support interdisciplinary partnerships that combine research, innovation, and sustainable development, with a focus on generating practical solutions that contribute to a resilient and inclusive Amazonian bioeconomy. Through this call, UBBI and FAPESPA seek to support collaborative projects that strengthen the BioAmazon Valley ecosystem through scientific discovery, technological development, entrepreneurship, and evidence-based policymaking.

The priority areas outlined below have been identified as strategic sectors for the development of the BioAmazon Valley and for strengthening Pará's position as a global hub for science, technology, and innovation based on Amazonian socio-biodiversity.

Connect Amazonia 2026 is intended to act as a catalyst for long-term UK-Pará research and innovation partnerships that support the sustainable development ambitions of Pará and the wider Amazon region.

Objectives

The scheme seeks to:

  • Strengthen long-term strategic research and innovation partnerships between the University of Birmingham and institutions in the State of Pará, while enhancing research capacity, researcher mobility, skills development, and early-career researcher opportunities.
  • Support the BioAmazon Valley vision by transforming scientific knowledge into sustainable social, environmental, and economic value through collaboration among researchers, innovators, communities, policymakers, and industry partners.
  • Advance interdisciplinary research and innovation addressing opportunities and challenges associated with Amazonian biodiversity and sustainable development.
  • Generate pathways towards larger-scale international funding, technology development, commercialisation, and policy impact.
  • Promote responsible and sustainable engagement with Amazonian biodiversity, traditional knowledge systems, and local communities.
  • Foster sustainable solutions rooted in Amazonian biodiversity and knowledge systems that contribute to a resilient and inclusive bioeconomy.

Strategic Priority Areas

The strategic priority areas below have been identified in consultation with FAPESPA and reflect priority sectors for the development of the BioAmazon Valley ecosystem. Collectively, these areas seek to accelerate the transition from scientific discovery to innovation, supporting the creation of sustainable products, processes and services derived from Amazonian biodiversity and knowledge systems.

Proposals must align with one or more of the following BioAmazon Valley strategic priority areas:

1. Health and Medicine

Research and innovation related to pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, natural products, public health, traditional medicines, disease prevention, diagnostics, medical devices and healthcare systems relevant to Amazonian populations.

2. Bio-Cosmetics

Development of sustainable cosmetic products, ingredients and technologies derived from Amazonian biodiversity, including natural oils, plant extracts, bioactive compounds and sustainable value chains.

3. Food Crops and Sustainable Food Systems

Research supporting food security, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry systems, climate-resilient crops, food processing technologies and value-added products originating from Amazonian biodiversity.

4. Energy and Sustainability

Innovations addressing renewable energy, sustainable production systems, climate adaptation, circular economy approaches, resource efficiency, carbon reduction and environmental monitoring.

5. Advanced Textile Materials

Development of sustainable fibres, biomaterials and innovative textile products derived from Amazonian natural resources, including applications in fashion, manufacturing and industrial sectors.

6. High Technology and Advanced Materials

Research in advanced manufacturing, smart materials, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, sensors, robotics and other emerging technologies with potential applications to Amazonian challenges and opportunities.

7. Omics Sciences (AMAZOMICS – Amazon Genome and Related Fields)

Research applying genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics and related technologies to advance understanding, conservation and sustainable use of Amazonian biodiversity.

8. Design and Biomimetics

Research and innovation inspired by Amazonian biological systems, combining design, engineering, architecture, materials science and nature-based solutions to create sustainable products and technologies.

These areas have been defined to promote interdisciplinary research, technological advancement and sustainable development pathways tailored to the Amazon's unique socio-biodiversity context.

Cross-Cutting Principles

All projects should demonstrate, where appropriate, how they will:

  • Contribute to the BioAmazon Valley ecosystem by creating sustainable social, environmental and economic value from Amazonian biodiversity and associated knowledge systems.
