A room full of parents and carers and their children sit and listen to a presenter in front of a large screen.

A relaxed session for parents and carers to explore fascinating research while little ones play, feed, or snooze. Each session welcomes guest researchers to share insights on topics from child development to science, health, and society.

The Exchange offers a welcoming, accessible space with excellent baby-changing facilities. Come as you are - curious minds (and wriggly babies) encouraged!

Prof. Andrew J. Bremner - Self-awareness in infancy: What is it like being a baby?

Babies cannot communicate their experiences, making it challenging to study what early life is like. Andrew will show how developmental psychology has provided a window into infants’ sensory experiences and the beginnings of self-awareness.

Dr Lucy Kelsall-Knight - Two-mum families’ experiences of children’s healthcare in England

A talk exploring both positive and challenging healthcare experiences of two-mum families in England.

Facilities & accessibility

We’re committed to making The Exchange as welcoming and accessible as possible. There’s step-free access and accessible toilets on all floors, plus a Changing Places toilet on the basement level. Guide dogs and assistance animals are always welcome. If you have any questions about access, just drop us an email at engage@contacts.bham.ac.uk.

Baby facilities

If you're attending with little ones, we’ve got you covered! A wall-mounted changing bench is available in both the ground-floor male and female toilets. We also welcome breastfeeding anywhere, but if you’d prefer a bit of privacy, there’s a baby feeding room available on the ground floor.
