What to expect

Looking at authors such as H. G. Wells and Joseph Conrad, this talk, led by Professor Nathan Waddell, traces how ideas about the sun and the solar system shaped stories about power, empire and global connection at a time when the modern world was taking shape, bringing together literature, science and history.

• The café in the Banking Hall is open throughout the event and serves hot and cold drinks.
• Take the opportunity to see Helios, a vast illuminated sculpture by British artist Luke Jerram depicting the surface of the sun using NASA imagery.

This talk takes place in The Vaults, which is accessible by stairs and lift.
