Copper electroplating: to rust, to energise, to purify
Understand the principles of electrochemistry through the process of electroplating.

- DateWednesday, 25 February 2026 (13:00 - 15:00) (UK)
- LocationMurray Learning Centre, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2FG
This masterclass will explore the principles of electrochemistry through the process of electroplating. Together with the students, we will perform copper electroplating on 3D-printed miniatures (e.g. the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower 'Old Joe').
Through engaging presentations with case studies and examples, we will discuss the principles of electrochemistry and electroplating. These will explain corrosion, battery functions/mechanisms (e.g. charging-discharging in a Li-ion battery cell) and manufacturing of very clean metals and alloys for detecting systems to enable direct Dark Matter detection and other rare event searches.
This event is part of our Masterclasses series and is open to Year 11 students.
