
Culture, conflict and sanctuary
Join us for a diverse programme of talks, films and displays exploring how culture sustains community across migration and illuminates the impact of conflict.

Open to Culture Forward members and to both University colleagues and external organisations working across migration, refugee and asylum seeker communities, the cultural and creative sectors.
Join us for a programme of presenters and speakers from the University of Birmingham and other organisations exploring how culture is:
- Deployed across conflict zones to celebrate and cohere community(ies) and maintain the vitality of tangible and intangible heritage;
- Used by migrant, refugee and asylum seeker communities to establish their heritage in their place of refuge and maintain their connection to both their homeland and across their diaspora;
- Used to document, share and express the experiences of those either in conflict zones or those who have fled them as migrants, refugees or asylum seekers.
Our agenda includes:
- The ‘Art Above War’ and ‘Departures’ projects presentation by Fernando Carrera, Co-founder of global NGO Bak’omondo
- The cultural outputs of the CHiBOW (Children Born of War) project presented by the University of Birmingham’s Professor Sabine Lee and Dheeraj Alkolkar, Founder and Director of Vardo Films
- The ‘Memory as Transgenerational Care’ project and the resultant ‘Sea of Shadows’ exhibition presentation by the University of Birmingham’s Professor Mónica Jato
- The How do you Dance in a War Zone? project presentation/talk on the project by artist-photographers Paul Hill and Maria Falconer.
- The SEREDA Project: Sexual and gender based violence in the refugee crisis: from displacement to arrival presentation by Sarah Taal, Director and Advocate for the Baobab Women’s Project
- The ‘Photohistories of the Cristero War’ project presentation by the University of Birmingham’s Dr Lucy O’Sullivan"
