Electrons at work: An experimental workshop
Join this masterclass for a practical introduction to the vast field of physics that is quantum mechanics.

- DateWednesday, 4 February 2026 (13:00 - 15:00) (UK)
- LocationPoynting Building, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT
The electron is a negatively charged fundamental particle. Working together with our lab demonstrators, we'll explore the interesting phenomena that is its' wave-particle dual nature and provide an introduction into the vast field of physics that is quantum mechanics. This will be done through a hands-on experimental workshop in our University's physics lab using specialist equipment such as diffraction tubes, vernier callipers etc.
You will have a choice of either investigating an electron diffraction pattern using induced magnetic fields or testing your precision and accuracy skills in an electron charge-to-mass ratio experiment.
This event is open to Year 12 students only.
