We use our jaws every day, but have you ever thought about where they came from? To a palaeontologist, the jaw is a pretty recent invention! For the first 100 million years of vertebrate evolution, long before dinosaurs, the world’s ancient oceans were full of fish without jaws. But where are they now? And most importantly, how did they eat?

Thanks to cutting edge techniques, palaeontologists at the University of Birmingham have learned so much more about the lives of these unusual ancient fishes. This November, we invite you to grab your snorkels and dive back in time for an immersive temporary exhibition showcasing this new research.
