From March to November 2026, The Exchange will host Helios, a breathtaking, large-scale illuminated sculpture by acclaimed British artist Luke Jerram. This spectacular new artwork will transform The Exchange’s historic Banking Hall into an immersive celebration of art and science, and a rare opportunity to gaze at our closest star.

The installation

Suspended high within the Banking Hall, Helios measures five metres in diameter and is illuminated from within, casting a golden glow across the space.

An edition of Jerram’s internationally touring artwork, Helios features high-resolution NASA imagery that reveals the astonishing details of the solar surface, including swirling sunspots and dramatic solar flares. While sun-gazing in the café and event space, visitors can also experience a specially composed soundscape that accompanies the piece.

Exploring our connection to the Sun

To complement the sculpture, a wrap-around exhibition will showcase cutting-edge research from University of Birmingham academics, exploring the science behind our body clocks, how we harness the Sun for solar energy, how the region is adapting to a changing climate, how researchers model the risks of space weather, and more.

With Jerram’s work overhead, visitors can explore the research taking place in the depths of space and right here on Earth, discovering how understanding the Sun helps us adapt and better care for our planet.
